This paper sheds light on changing farmers' land management practices in two mountain watersheds, with and without external
assistance, in the western hills of Nepal. Information used in the analysis were obtained through a survey of 300 households,
group discussion, key informant interviews, and field observation conducted during April–September 1999. Confronted with ever-decreasing
landholding size due to a steadily growing population and scarcity of nonfarming employment opportunities, farmers in both
watersheds have increasingly adopted assorted types of structural and biological measures to control soil erosion, landslides,
gully expansion, and soil nutrient loss to maintain or even enhance land productivity. Adoption of gully control measures,
construction of the retention walls, alley cropping, use of vegetative measures for landslide control, mulching, and use of
green manure and chemical fertilizers are found significantly high in the project area due to the provision of technical and
financial support, whereas composting is found significantly high in the nonproject area. Different from the traditionally
held beliefs, population pressure on a finite land resource has brought positive change in land management. However, the experience
from both watersheds indicates that there is limit to the extent that resource poor farmers can respond to land degradation
without any external assistance. Required is the arrangement for appropriate polices and support services and facilities enabling
farmers to adopt locationally suitable and economically attractive land management technologies. 相似文献

Evaluating China's Slope Land Conversion Program as sustainable management in Tianquan and Wuqi Counties 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Increased soil erosion on sloped land has become a significant environmental concern in China that has been attributed to human activities such as deforestation, over-cultivation, and over-grazing of livestock. In order to reduce soil erosion on sloped lands, the Chinese government has responded by implementing large-scale, ecological rehabilitation programs, including the "Grain for Green" reforestation project. This program involves financial incentives to transition farmers into other economic activities with the goal of reducing ecological pressures and degradation. Because of the scope and potential impacts from these programs, detailed research is needed to understand their social and ecological effects. This paper reports on research conducted in Tianquan County, Sichuan Province, and Wuqi County, Shaanxi Province, that evaluates the effects of the program upon local economies and household livelihood systems. The paper argues that the successful conversion of farmland under "Grain for Green" depends upon local government involvement, local economic development, and funding for local projects. Without economic development within rural economies, we conclude that farmers will remain dependent upon continued subsidy assistance to meet the policy's ambitious environmental restrictions, thereby undermining the program's long-term sustainability. 相似文献

Agricultural Land Use Effects on Sediment Loading and Fish Assemblages in Two Minnesota (USA) Watersheds 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
We examined the relationship between water quality and fish communities within two agricultural areas using a computer simulation model. Our analyses focused on a coolwater stream, Wells Creek in southeastern Minnesota, and a warmwater stream, the Chippewa River in western Minnesota. We used the Agricultural Drainage and Pesticide Transport (ADAPT) model in relation to land use to calculate instream suspended sediment concentrations using estimates of sediment delivery, runoff, baseflow and streambank erosion, and quantified the effects of suspended sediment exposure on fish communities. We predicted the effects of agricultural practices on stream fish communities under several possible land use scenarios, with reference to current conditions. Land use changes led to reductions in sediment loading of up to 84% in Wells Creek and 49% in the Chippewa River. The reduction in sediment loading across scenarios may be directly related to a reduction in runoff by about 35% in both study areas. We found a 98% decrease in lethal concentrations of suspended sediment on fish in Wells Creek with an increase in conservation tillage, riparian buffers, and permanent vegetative cover. However, the effects of suspended sediment did not significantly decrease in the Chippewa River. This difference between study areas was likely due to differences in tolerance to suspended sediment between coolwater and warmwater fish communities and differences in topography, runoff and bank erosion between the two streams.

Landform-based physiographic maps, also called land systems inventories, have been widely and successfully used in undeveloped/rural areas in several locations, such as Australia, the western United States, Canada, and the British ex-colonies. This paper presents a case study of their application in a developed semi-urban/suburban area (Segovia, Spain) for land use planning purposes. The paper focuses in the information transfer process, showing how land use decision-makers, such as governments, planners, town managers, etc., can use the information developed from these maps to assist them. The paper also addresses several issues important to the development and use of this information, such as the goals of modern physiography, the types of landform-based mapping products, the problem of data management in developed areas, and the distinctions among data, interpretations, and decisions. 相似文献

/ Land use/land cover classifications for 1973 and 1991, derived from the interpretation of satellite imagery, are quantified on the basis of biophysical land units in a study area in southeastern Australia. Nutrient export potentials are estimated for each land unit based on their composition of land use/land cover classes. Spatial and temporal comparisons are made of the land units based on the calculated pollution hazard indicators to provide an insight into changes in the state of the environment and the regional significance of land use changes. For example, one ecosystem, unique to the study, showed a large increase in pollution hazard over the study period as a manifestation of an 11-fold rise in cleared area and an expansion of cropping activities. A survey of land degradation was undertaken in New South Wales, Australia during 1987–1988. The aims of the survey were to
assess the location, extent, and severity of ten forms of degradation and to present the data in map and statistical form.
Sample points were located on a regular grid. The method was designed so that data could be acquired from aerial photographs,
expert local knowledge, and limited field checking. Individual statewide maps were prepared for each form of degradation.
Map data were shown in pixel form. Sheet and rill erosion and soil structure decline were confined mostly to lands used for
cropping. Gully erosion was commonly found across the state, while mass movement was confined to steeper lands. There were
three severe areas of dryland salinity; irrigation salinity was mapped in parts of the southern irrigation lands. Induced
soil acidity was severe in some cropping and pasture lands. Absence of tree regrowth was a noticeable feature of lands used
for cropping. The survey enabled community awareness of the problems of land degradation to be increased, in addition to assisting
regional land managers in resource allocation. The survey also provided the basis for the future location of sites that could

Recent wetland area trends were estimated from the National Resources Inventory (NRI) for nonfederal rural lands for the period
1982–1987. NRI-based estimates of wetland area for states comprising the conterminous United States were highly correlated
with estimates made by the US Fish and Wildlife Service and with estimates of coastal salt marsh wetlands made by the National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Net wetland area declined by 1.1% (≈363,200 ha) during the five-year study period.
Conversion to open water, primarily caused by natural flooding in western inland basins, was responsible for altering extensive
wetland areas (≈171,400 ha). Of the human-induced wetland conversions, urban and built-up land was responsible for 48% of
the wetland loss, while agricultural development was indicated in 37% of the converted wetland area. A decrease in rural land,
and increases in both population, and urban and built-up land were associated with wetland loss among states. Potential reasons
for wetland loss were different in 20 coastal states than in 28 inland states. Proportionately, wetland loss due to development
was three times greater in coastal states than inland states, while agriculturally induced wetland losses were similar in

As part of the planning process, maps of natural factors are often superimposed in order to identify areas which are suitable or unsuitable for a particular type of resource management. Overlay maps may also be used to identify analysis areas for predictive modeling of resource productivity and ecological response to management. Current interest in applying computer-assisted mapping technology to making overlay maps is drawing attention to geographic information systems for this purpose. The resultant maps, however, may be so inaccurate or unable to capture significant units of productivity and ecological response that they could lead to imperfect or false conclusions. Ensuring that new buildings do not interfere with the recreational and protective functions of the natural system and that the buildings will be useful long enough to protect the investment are among long-term solutions to coastal erosion. We propose that coastal cliff management districts be established for management of eroding high relief shorelines. Such districts would include an imminent failure zone, in which bluff retreat is possible at any time; a migration zone, which allows for long-term shoreline retreat; and a stability control zone in which activities affecting bluff erosion are restricted. Procedures are described for delineating these zones based on geomorphic criteria. If these land use controls are implemented, some shorefront development can be accommodated while retaining valuable characteristics of the natural system. 相似文献
